Description

New York University and American Ballet Theatre partner to offer the original graduate program in dance education. In this program, graduate students work toward their Master of Arts Degree in Teaching Dance in the Professions with a certificate in ABT Ballet Pedagogy. This program prepares graduates for employment in multiple settings including private studios, conservatories, company schools, as teaching-artists, and through community outreach studios. Students are also equipped for further doctoral study in dance education and teaching in higher education. The applicant for this track is an accomplished ballet dancer who wants to develop pedagogical content in this art form. For more information on the ABT/NYU Master’s Degree Program, browse the sections below or visit the NYU Steinhardt website. The dance education aspect of this curriculum is taught by American Ballet Theatre master teachers, and pedagogy and research are complemented with an arts management course. Students examine the study of ballet technique for the express purpose of developing research-informed and proficient teachers who possess a complete understanding of the use of the biomechanics of movement, artistic imagery, and the development of students on professional and recreational tracks of study. Integrated fieldwork studies provide opportunities to cultivate professional networks in the dance capital of the world. The ABT/NYU Master’s Program requires full-time study; coursework starts each September and can be completed in three semesters. The program totals 36 credits.
