Description

MFAB educational system is based on an integrated curriculum. Our departments of Dance, Music, Drama, Visual Arts, Scholarly Arts, Technical Arts and Theater Craft work together so the students develop a broad understanding of all aspects of material learned. In addition, the goal of an MFAB education is to prepare every student to work at the highest level of Fine Arts from graduation to grave, far beyond their active career on stage. In the profession of ballet, dancers must be familiar with a wide array of dance styles. MFAB teaches them Bournonville, Vaganova, Russian, English and Balanchine technique classes, but also technique-based modern classes (Graham, Hawkins, Cunningham, Ailey and others) as well as contemporary, improvisation and more. In addition, they learn from the beginning traditional, court, folk and ritual dance styles, learning the music, historical origins and notable uses of these dances in concert dance.

Session Description

Having acquired a firm foundation of dance technique in the Lower School, as well as a solid base of knowledge in the General Arts studies, students are now groomed for their professional careers. Their workload increases and broadens, with the gradual linking together of all of the different elements that come together in Classical Ballet, and then, in the final two tiers, they learn how to package, present, represent and advocate for their art form. The Upper School also refines the study of arts techniques with emphasis on stylization, stylistic consistency, continuity of presentation, distillation of interpretation and effectiveness of communication through the various disciplines. In depth study of all aspects of technique is demanded. Standards are very high in the Upper School, and graduation is achieved only by those students who truly become accomplished young artists.

Session Description

In the Lower School, students learn how to execute steps in ballet, read and write music, approach the basic techniques of dramatic presentation, and master elemental techniques of design, drawing, color, composition and statements in visual arts. Ballet is difficult, and therefore can seem defeating to a young student if they try to do a technical movement before they are ready. When children are pushed too quickly ahead, they will suffer injuries in the short term, and debilitating ailments later in life. Therefore the muscles must be carefully trained, in the correct order. This is to ensure that each child develops the exact combination of strength, stretch, coordination and rhythm so that they are able to achieve the various steps. The Lower School is divided into four levels, numbered sequentially. Each level has a specific goal in the development of the facility of the student (mind, body, psychology and emotions), and the technique of performing the various elements of each art form. It is assumed that students will spend a minimum of two years at each level in the Lower School, thus taking an expected minimum of 8 years to graduate.
