About the workshop Led by Elio Gervasi, the Workshop-Auditions offer a unique opportunity to engage in various forms of research based on a shared movement vocabulary and improvisation methods. Inspired by the principles of Trisha Brown’s fluid and dynamic approach to movement, this workshop encourages dancers to develop a deep awareness of their bodies within a collective language. Rather than focusing on individual styles, participants will work towards a common movement vocabulary, refining a way of moving that embraces efficiency, clarity, and adaptability. The workshop begins with a warm-up centered on floor work, followed by movement research designed to break habitual patterns while fostering a cohesive, shared physicality. Throughout the workshop, we will explore specific themes such as space, gravity, and collision, applying these principles to solo movement before expanding into group dynamics (duos, trios, and larger formations). Contact improvisation and partnering will also be integral parts of our exploration. While the focus is on developing a collective vocabulary, Elio also values the unique strengths and cultural backgrounds that each dancer brings to the process. When he recognizes a particular quality—whether technical, expressive, or rooted in a dancer’s cultural heritage—he may highlight and integrate these elements into the group work, enriching the overall creative exploration. To align with the direction of this workshop, we encourage participants to watch recordings of Trisha Brown’s work as a source of inspiration, helping to deepen their understanding of the movement principles we will be investigating over the weeks. What sets these workshops apart is Elio’s collaborative approach, reflecting the way he works with his company. This provides participants with an authentic insight into his creative process. At the end of the two weeks, we will hold a public performance. The setting of this workshop is also unique, taking place in a small village in Italy. This environment minimizes distractions and fosters creativity, allowing dancers to immerse themselves in the local culture while engaging deeply with the work. You’ll have the chance to connect with dancers from around the world, building relationships that could benefit your future endeavors.
