The Zagreb City Theatre "Komedija" was founded on 1 November 1950 as the legal successor of the Zagreb Drama Theatre and the Vedro Kerempuh Theatre. Its main activity is the performance of musical performances (operettas and comic operas since 1950; musicals since 1960; rock and pop operas since 1975) and dramatic performances (classical and contemporary comedy of world and domestic comedies). It also carries out publishing activities. The artistic ensemble of the Theatre, in addition to dramatic actors and actor-singers, also consists of singers, a choir, a ballet and an orchestra (more than 150 employees, including theatre workshops and technical and joint services). The first performance was performed on November 29, 1950, and to date, around 13,000 performances have been held, of which more than 300 titles. Among the famous hits of “Komedija” are the musicals Yalta, Yalta (Grgić – Kabiljo), Fiddler on the Roof (Bock – Stein); the operettas Zemlja smiška (Lehar), Kneginja čárdaša (Kalman), Šišmiš (Strauss); the comedies Probudi se, Kato (Grgić), Klupko (Budak) and the rock operas Gubec beg (Krajač – Metikoš – Prohaska) and Grička vještica (Krajač – Metikoš – Prohaska). The theatre, its projects and its employees have won many prestigious awards and recognitions. An unavoidable, important, unique and great recognition of "Komedija"'s work is certainly its numerous visitors (many of whom have been attending "Komedija"'s performances for generations): individual, organized and subscription audiences, in the main hall of the Theatre and on guest appearances.
